Shadows of Memory
by Barbara McFadyen
Jewelry has long been used as a symbol of status, mark of rank or achievement, and lasting memento of love or remembrance; a special kind of language in countless forms wrought in various precious metals, gems, and other materials. My work explores this language through techniques of metalwork and enamel in a pursuit for beauty, method of remembrance, and expressions of love and longing.
By preserving reflections of past memories and the stories they hold in metal and enamel I am reconnected to those loved or lost. Tapping inspiration and historical reference from mourning and sentimental jewelry, the works I create can act as portal to the past, as well as a form of protection and comfort. As I explore wearable forms of jewelry, through the permanence of precious and non-precious metals I am able to find solace while capturing precious moments from fading and being lost in time. Through the dedication of making, I lose myself in the transformation of raw materials as they become revealed into unique objects of adornment and remembrance.
