This piece is an ode to nuclear semiotics, and an imagined memorial to our nuclear future and the dangers lasting into an unthinkably vast time frame it presents. How do we communicate danger to whoever or whatever inhabits this planet 10,000+ years in the future? Will they speak any known language, or will our concept of hostile architecture translate to them? The top section of the brooch contains a proposed warning message from Sandia National Laboratories, the bottom an example of the proposed hostile architecture used to deter future explorers, rendered in vitreous enamel. In a nod to the Georgian and Victorian memorial jewelry that greatly inspires my work, bone ash and human hair are contained behind the quartz cabochon connecting elements.
