Bolo Tie

by Mark Thone

At first glance, this piece may not give the idea of momento mori, but it has a story to tell. Several years ago, my brother passed away. He was an active and well know graffiti writer in our home town. After his passing and while visiting his art, I collected several pieces of chert from the train tracks from one of his first spots. They were collected with intention of making jewelry for my family. My father was never one to wear jewelry, but did often wear a bolo to dress up. I decided to fabricate one from silver to feature the polished stone and give it to him as a gift. Fast forward a few years, my father passed away, and I ended up with the bolo back in my hands. I do like to wear it to dress up sometimes and remember my family.
