Grandma & Who

by Sandi Carter

The mother and daughter relationship should be one of immense love and lasting memories, but not everyone has this experience. My mother was Korean and our relationship was filled with misunderstandings, disconnection, and confusion. After her death in 2019, it took me some time to work through not knowing who my mother really was even though I saw her everyday. I still didn’t know who she really was because she didn’t share her feelings, but I was able to forgive her for that silence. These sculptures both “create” family photos that don’t exist. The photo collages come from rearranging photos and use underglaze pencils to draw on prepared enamel surfaces.
