Pink Carnation Bolo (Gothic)

by Mallory Weston

"I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died"

With titles inspired by the immortal lyrics of Don McClean, these pieces are nostalgic and wistful about a past long gone. This trio of Pink Carnation Bolo Ties references the life and significance of symbols and colors. Three classic headstone silhouettes are parsed down to their barest form and fabricated as the sleek white focal pieces. The bolo ties speak to the cultural importance of these symbols, pairing the somber recognizable forms with the iconic American Western necktie design. The white is intended to elevate the pieces into a virginal and sublime, yet sterile state. They convey an eerie absence, as if a force has taken the spirit of the quintessential turquoise bejeweled cowboy’s bolo tie and robbed it of its talismanic properties. The action involved in wearing these pieces reinforces the slightly sinister nature of the work. To properly wear a piece, the user must cinch the thick braided leather and pull the tombstone closer around the throat, mimicking the action of a hangman’s noose.
